Confidence, Clarity & Clients: 3 Keys to Coaching Success

What separates those who dream about a thriving coaching career from those who actually build one?

Whether they would ever admit it or not, many believe that the answer is luck. Right place, right time, and poof, success.

Yet in all our years training and certifying life coaches, a different answer has emerged.

The coaches who reach the top of this profession are those who master three core ingredients: confidence, clarity, and clients. 

And believe it or not, each of these ingredients can be deliberately nurtured right now.

Confidence: showing up whether you “feel ready” or not

What holds a lot of coaches back is the belief that they cannot act without confidence.

If you’ve ever thought “I don’t feel ready yet” as you hold off on telling others about your coaching services, or finding your first client, you know what I’m talking about.

At first, it seems logical. After all, if you don’t feel confident, where do you get the motivation to act? It can feel like trying to start a car with no gas in the tank. 

This is where Brave Action becomes so critical. Every time you show up, speak up, share your story, and take the action you can take TODAY for your career… 

You actually build the confidence you’ve been waiting for, through those actions.

The fear of visibility for coaches, for instance, often melts in the face of Brave Action. As you continue putting yourself out there, your nervous system sees: “I can do this.”

As you build self-confidence, taking action becomes second-nature, and results grow.

You don’t need to jump straight into the deepest end of the pool, either. Maybe you’re genuinely not ready to be interviewed on a podcast yet. 

But you could picture yourself hosting a small Facebook Live with your own small audience. 

That’s perfect. Start there! That small step will compound into greater ones over time.

The more regularly you take action, the more you strengthen your belief that you can create movement and results. That’s how you boost confidence as a coach.

Clarity: knowing who you serve and that transformation you offer

How do some coaches seem to “just know” what to do and when to do it? 

While others second-guess themselves in circles, or endlessly seek expert opinion, some coaches appear to almost be guided to success by some invisible force. 

These coaches are completely clear on who they serve, what kind of transformation they offer, and how to communicate their value in a compelling and authentic way. 

Without this foundation of unshakable clarity, even the best marketing strategies fail. 

Once you have it, though, you can attract lots of right-fit clients even if you’re not the best marketer. 

Clarity is also what lets you say “no” to all the opportunities that might sound interesting in the moment, but won’t actually move you forward.

For instance, when you start out as a coach, many people will say that you “have to” do countless things: online advertising, networking groups, you name it.

Any and all of these things can be great. But when you try to do everything at once, it rarely creates the results you’re looking for.

With clarity, you gain the awareness to see which strategies and tactics truly matter today, and which ones might make more sense down the road.

As a result, you’re able to put more intentionality into what you’re doing now, which translates to more impact and income. 

That’s what purpose-driven coaching is truly all about!

Clients: the heartbeat of your business

How to attract coaching clients is the question that’s on the minds of every life coach.

Every life coach, that is, EXCEPT those who’ve stopped chasing and started connecting.

Once you embody your most authentic, transformational self as a coach (and speak directly to the right people) something incredible happens.

The most aligned clients are drawn to your energy, message, and mission naturally without pressure.

While other coaches plead and overpromise to try to get more clients in the door, the right clients are eager to work with you simply because you’re you.

Most coaches never arrive at this point. Their entire careers are spent cycling through one tip and trick after another, always in search of that elusive “magic pill” to get clients.

That’s what happens when coaches neglect the confidence and clarity pillars of their career. 

When you skip those softer, more internal success factors and jump straight to client-getting, you aren’t “being efficient.” 

You’re sacrificing the most critical part of attracting clients who stick with you and refer others. Which, by the way, is what happens when your clients experience results.

After their life changes, they naturally want others in their circle to experience that same kind of transformation. Those new clients, in turn, show up ready and motivated.

One of the best ways to fuse your confidence and clarity and attract ideal coaching clients is through storytelling that makes a human connection. 

This is huge. When someone is considering a multi-thousand-dollar investment in a transformational journey, they need to buy into YOU. Not just your promise.

What makes a client eager to work with you is not necessarily the technical “way” that you’ll coach them. Or even the promised benefit. (Although of course that matters.)

It’s the sudden, undeniable feeling of: “This person gets me. I respect them, I want what they have, and we must work together.” 

THAT FEELING is the engine of a successful coaching practice. When you know how to create it, paying coaching clients will be plentiful.

Whether you’re a business coach, health coach, relationship coach, or life coach, it’s all about that feeling of “must work with you” arising in the client. 

And one of the most time-tested effective ways to create that feeling in the right potential clients is through storytelling that builds trust.

Whether the story is delivered via blog post, video, social feed, or direct mail matters less than the strength of the story itself.
