Learn How to Stop The Scroll and Attract The Right Customers (Without Oversharing)

Sure, you want to build authority in your field. You want potential customers to see that you know what you’re talking about. You want them to stop the scroll and think to themselves, “This is the coach I’m going with.”

But let’s be honest: trying to sound “professional” can feel like wearing pants two sizes too small. It’s stiff. It’s uncomfortable.

And deep down, you know it’s not you.

If you’re anything like the aspiring coaches I’ve worked with, you’ve probably wondered:

“How do I talk about what I do in a way that actually connects with people… without feeling fake or oversharing?”

Because every time you’re about to post something, you feel as if you’re walking on a tight rope: if you’re trying to be “professional,” it ends up being bland. Like any other generic inspirational post from the thousands of coaches out there…

On the other hand, if you share too much, you fear you’ll lose credibility with your audience. You feel exposed and wonder if they’ll ever hire someone whose life is such a mess.

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to be a marketing expert to create content that works. There’s a simple way to figure out the perfect balance between building connection and positioning yourself in the industry.

To achieve this, you already have the most powerful marketing tool in your hands. Or rather — in your heart.

It’s not your résumé. Not your elevator pitch.

It’s your story.

Your real, honest-to-goodness story — the one that shows others how far you’ve come and what’s possible for them, too.

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through:

  • Why your story builds emotional connection and trust faster than any “pitch” ever could
  • What types of stories your future clients are craving
  • A simple structure to craft a compelling story that attracts the people you’re meant to serve

And if you want help uncovering your own core message — without oversharing or feeling vulnerable in the wrong way — I’ll show you where to get support at the end.

Let’s dive in.

Why Story Marketing Builds Trust Faster Than Polished Pitches

Have you ever heard someone give a polished, professional introduction… and instantly tuned out?

That’s because our brains aren’t wired for pitch-speak.

They’re wired for storytelling.

We’re emotional beings. It’s not logic that makes us follow someone, buy their products or services, or say “yes” to coaching. It’s the emotional connection we feel when we hear a good story and say, “Wow… she gets me.”

That’s the power of storytelling in marketing.

I’ve seen it over and over with the coaches I mentor: when someone finally shares their truth — the messy, real-life part of how they got there — their audience starts to lean in.

Your marketing story isn’t about “impressing.” It’s about telling the truth in a way that builds trust.

And trust is the currency of coaching.

How to Share Your Story Without Oversharing or Feeling Emotionally Exposed

First things first — before going through the different types of stories you can use to attract potential customers, let’s talk about one of the key elements keeping coaches from sharing their story online:

The vulnerability hangover.

You post something heartfelt… then immediately feel like you want to delete it and hide under a blanket. Sound familiar?

If you’re a spiritual person on a growth path, chances are you’re deeply self-aware. That’s a beautiful thing — but it can make telling your story feel risky.

Here’s the deal:

Your story is sacred. You don’t have to share everything to be effective.

Instead, share from the scar, not the wound.

What does that mean?

  • Don’t share something you’re still actively healing.
  • Avoid turning your post into a journal entry or therapy session.
  • Don’t try to prove yourself or get validation.

Instead, come from service.

Ask yourself:

  • “How does this help my audience?”
  • “What’s the takeaway for them?”

When you approach storytelling from this place — as a generous act — you stay in your power. You lead.

And that’s what makes a great coach.

The Types of Stories That Resonate in the Coaching Industry

You don’t have to tell your entire life story to build brand loyalty.

In fact, please don’t.

The key is choosing the kind of storytelling strategy that speaks to your target audience — and highlights the transformation you provide in a way they can see themselves in.

Here are three types of stories that work beautifully in the coaching space:

1. The “Before & After” Transformation Story

This is the heart of content marketing for coaches. It’s your journey.

What was life like before you found this path?

What moment cracked you open?

And where are you now?

The key here is honesty. You don’t need to dramatize — just focus on the feelings: overwhelm, doubt, burnout, a longing for something more.

Maybe it was crying in the car before work.

Maybe it was realizing you were going through the motions in your own life, day after day.

Paint the picture of what day-to-day life looked like for you. It’s the little details that will help them see themselves reflected in your story and create an emotional connection.

Then you’ll reveal the moment of change — the shift — where your target audience will discover what is possible for them.

You can also use this type of story showcasing client wins and their transformation (with their permission, of course.)

2. The “Why I Do This Work” Story

This is where you invite people into your heart.

Why are you a coach? What lights you up about helping others?

For many spiritual coaches, this story is rooted in service — a sense of contribution to something bigger than yourself. Sharing that spark gives people a sense of your values and vision.

For example: “After helping my sister through her divorce, I realized I felt more alive during those calls than I did in my 9-5.” That’s a compelling story. That’s purpose in motion.

This kind of story allows the reader to get a better understanding of who you are at your core — which in turn, helps you build trust.

3. The “Breakthrough Moment” Story

This is a smaller, more targeted story. It focuses on a single, powerful moment when everything changed — often unexpectedly.

It could be a conversation, a spiritual download, or an unexpected insight that changed your course. It’s short but emotionally rich.

These attention-grabbing stories show your audience that sometimes, all it takes is one honest moment to shift the entire trajectory of a life.

Think of it as a snapshot that reveals a deeper truth. When you share a real, raw turning point, your audience sees what’s possible for them — and starts to believe they’re one breakthrough away from changing their life too.

These stories are incredibly relatable to people who feel like they’re standing on the edge of something new but haven’t taken the leap yet.

Example:

“I was on a Zoom call, pretending to care about another quarterly report, when I caught my own reflection in the screen. I didn’t recognize her. That moment broke me open. I knew I couldn’t keep pretending — I wanted a life that lit me up.”

A Simple Structure to Turn Your Story Into a Client-Attracting Message

If the idea of sharing your story still feels overwhelming, you’re not alone.

One of the biggest concerns I hear from new coaches (especially those just starting to put themselves out there on social media) is:

“What if I ramble? Or worse… what if I overshare and regret it later?”

That’s exactly why having a structure is so helpful. You’re not just telling your story for the sake of storytelling — you’re using it intentionally to create connection and show others what’s possible for them.

So let me introduce you to a simple, beginner-friendly framework that will make your brand storytelling and marketing strategy much easier.

This 4-part model is designed to help you craft a compelling story that builds trust, creates an emotional connection, and positions you as a guide — not a guru.

Here’s how it works:

1. Struggle: Paint the “Before” Picture

Start by describing what life looked like before your transformation.

What were you struggling with? What emotions were you living with daily?

The key here is specificity. General statements like “I felt stuck” are fine, but the more real and detailed you can get, the more your audience will see themselves in your words.

Instead of saying:

“I was unfulfilled and burned out.”

Try something like:

“Every morning, I’d hit snooze three times just to delay the dread I felt about going to work. I’d pack lunches, make coffee, and then sit in traffic wondering, ‘Is this really all there is?’”

That’s a moment. That’s the power of story marketing.

Important: You’re not wallowing in the problem here. You’re creating resonance. You want your target audience to think, “Wow. She’s been exactly where I am.”

2. Shift: Reveal the Turning Point

Next, share the moment something changed.

This isn’t always one big lightning bolt — sometimes it’s a quiet, subtle shift. A book. A conversation. A moment of prayer or meditation where you finally heard your inner voice.

This part of your brand narrative is crucial because it marks the beginning of possibility.

Example:

“One night after missing my daughter’s recital because I stayed late at work — again — I sat on the kitchen floor and cried. I realized I couldn’t keep living like this. Something had to change.”

Or:

“I stumbled on a podcast about the Law of Attraction, and for the first time in years, I felt a flicker of hope. What if I wasn’t broken? What if I was powerful?”

This moment is where your audience begins to believe change is possible — not just for you, but for them.

3. Solution: What Helped You Shift

Now that you’ve opened the door, share what supported your transformation.

This could be coaching, personal development work, journaling, spiritual practice, mentorship — anything that gave you tools to evolve.

This section does two things:

1. It shows that growth takes support (which is why coaching exists).

2. It positions you as someone who has done the work — and can now guide others.

You might say:

“I invested in a life coach — something I’d never done before — and for the first time, I felt seen. I realized I didn’t have to have it all figured out to move forward, and just needed someone to believe in me until I could believe in myself.”

You can also weave in your training or methodology here if it feels natural. Just avoid turning it into a résumé.

Keep it focused on the transformation.

4. Success: Connect the Dots to What You Do Now

Finally, show the outcome — and how it informs the products or services you offer today.

This doesn’t mean you need to say you’ve “arrived” or that life is perfect. Instead, highlight the ways your life has changed, and how that growth now equips you to serve others.

Example:

“Today, I run a coaching business that helps women who feel stuck and invisible reconnect with their purpose and design a life they love. I get to do work that feels meaningful, and I’m home for dinner with my family every night. That’s everything.”

This part is what positions you as a guide. Not someone who’s better than your audience — but someone who’s just a few steps ahead, walking the path with them.

And that’s what a strong marketing strategy is all about: showing the transformation, and inviting others into it.

***

When you use this structure — Struggle, Shift, Solution, Success — your story becomes more than personal.

It becomes powerful.

It becomes a bridge between your truth and your audience’s desires.

  • It’s your most effective form of brand storytelling.
  • It creates brand loyalty.
  • It gives your content marketing clarity and soul.

Best of all? It feels natural. Honest. And fully aligned with who you really are.
