Lead With Joy

Spotlighting Creator Jennifer Joy Jimenéz

A Jubilant Year Ahead: Celebrating Personal Milestones and the Growth of TranscenDance™

As the calendar pages turn to mark the completion of my 49th year, I find myself reflecting on the journey thus far and the incredible milestone ahead. My mother often quoted, and as I echo her words today, that I am not just celebrating my 49th birthday this March 16th: I am stepping into the threshold of my 50th year. The 50th year, often heralded as the year of the Jubilee, represents a time when the stars align, bringing forth a cascade of beautiful possibilities and golden opportunities to expand on our grandest dreams.

This year symbolizes more than just a personal landmark: it is an invitation to embrace the boundless potential that life offers. It’s a reminder that every moment is ripe with the chance to grow, to love, to learn, and to reach heights previously unimagined. In this special year of Jubilee, I am reminded of the importance of gratitude, the strength found in resilience, and the beauty of dreaming big.

This milestone is so much more than a personal celebration: it’s a moment to acknowledge the growth and impact of TranscenDance. As I look back on the life I’ve led — the decades spent nurturing and raising my 3 children, celebrating 29 years of marriage next month, and using conscious dance and transformational spiritual principles to enrich my personal life — I am filled with gratitude. These tools have not only sustained my relationship but have supported me through various stages of my life, including the transition into menopause and the challenging times brought by COVID.

TranscenDance™ has been a beacon during these times, providing a method to dance through life’s ups and downs with grace and vitality. It’s this profound personal impact that spurred the desire to share TranscenDance™ with others. About a decade ago, after leading a session at a large event, I was approached with a request that would set the course for the future: to create a train-the-trainer program. This led to the launch of the first TranscenDance™ Facilitator Training in 2014, inspired by Kathy Skubik’s vision to incorporate it into her massage school’s curriculum in Michigan.

Six years later, the inaugural TranscenDance™ retreat in Costa Rica was born and 2020 marked the official launch of our facilitator training program. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic shortly after, we embraced the opportunity to take our training virtual. Over the last four years, we’ve trained over 65 facilitators worldwide, from Europe to North America, and Mexico each bringing TranscenDance into their communities, retreats, and workshops in unique and transformative ways.

Our facilitators all over the globe have taken TranscenDance™ to new heights—on cruises and Hawaiian events, at UCLA, senior centers and more, respectively proving the modality’s versatility and power to inspire. For anyone seeking confidence, a holistic mind-body-spirit tool, or a spiritual practice that combines mindfulness, music, and movement, TranscenDance offers a pathway to self-discovery and transformation.

As I celebrate both my personal milestone and the growth of TranscenDance™, I’m excited to announce our upcoming intensive on March 22-24th, offering tracks for both personal development and facilitator training. This is a testament to the vision of making TranscenDance™ the leading conscious dance modality for healing, transformation, and global peace. Our new mantra, “One color, one culture, one love, one dance, TranscenDance™ for global peace,” encapsulates this vision.

Join us on this journey of growth and transformation as we continue to spread the joy and healing power of TranscenDance™. Click here to learn more about our upcoming Intensive, and be part of a movement that is changing lives and communities around the world.

Join me in celebrating not just another birthday, let’s make this 50th year a testament to the beauty of life, the strength of the human spirit, and the endless adventure that awaits us when we dare to dream big. Here’s to a year of jubilee and dancing our greatest dreams into reality.

Choreographing Change

Ruth St. Denis and International Women’s Day

On this International Women’s Day, we gather as a conscious dance community to honor and give thanks to the trailblazing women who have paved the way for us. It is a day to celebrate the resilience, strength, and creativity of women throughout history who have empowered us to dance freely and authentically. Among these remarkable women stands Ruth St. Denis, a visionary pioneer in the world of dance.

Ruth St. Denis was a pioneering figure in the world of dance, particularly in the realm of modern dance. Born on January 20, 1879, in Newark, New Jersey, she demonstrated her passion and talent for dance from a young age. Despite facing challenges and societal expectations, St. Denis pursued her dreams relentlessly, eventually making her debut as a skirt dancer in 1894.

“I have lived so long because in those moments when I am dancing, I am beyond time and space.”– Ruth St. Denis

Her career took off when she began touring with renowned producer David Belasco, where she honed her skills and developed a unique style influenced by Oriental philosophies. In 1911, St. Denis took a significant step in her career by founding Denishawn with her partner and husband, Ted Shawn. Denishawn became known as the “cradle of American modern dance” and served as a training ground for many influential dancers, including Martha Graham.

Together, St. Denis and Shawn revolutionized the dance world, blending ballet, ethnic dances, and spiritual elements into their performances. Throughout her later career, St. Denis continued to innovate and inspire, founding Adelphi University’s dance program and co-founding the School of Nataya. Despite Denishawn’s eventual decline, St. Denis’s impact on dance endured.

“I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what is too deep to find for words.” -Ruth St. Denis

She passed away on July 21, 1968, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence dancers and artists worldwide. Today, we celebrate Ruth St. Denis as a trailblazing woman in dance whose creativity, vision, and dedication paved the way for future generations of dancers.

Breath as Medicine

Navigating Emotions with TranscenDance™

In the realm of TranscenDance™, emotions are not just welcomed but embraced as integral components of the journey. From the heights of joy and laughter to the depths of suppressed anger and grief, every emotion finds its place on the dance floor. As Jennifer Joy Jiménez has said, “Our issues live in our tissues” — highlighting the profound connection between our emotional experiences and bodily sensations. When emotions are stifled or ignored, they can become trapped within us, manifesting as physical symptoms over time. However, by practicing deep, full-bodied as emotions surface during TranscenDance™, we create space to acknowledge, process, and ultimately release them. This conscious breathwork supports us in staying present with our emotions, allowing us to metabolize them and prevent their stagnation within our bodies.

Central to this process is the symbiotic relationship between breath and movement in TranscenDance™. As we synchronize our movements with our breath, we facilitate the flow of emotional energy throughout our bodies. Many practitioners have testified to the transformative power of this practice, finding solace in the ability to confront and heal long-held emotions and traumas that traditional talk therapy alone could not reach. By combining breath with movement, we harness the body’s innate wisdom to facilitate emotional processing, assimilation, and ultimately, liberation.

One particularly effective breathing technique involves inhaling deeply through the nose and exhaling slowly through the mouth. Visualizations can further enhance this practice, such as imagining inhaling the comforting aroma of a steaming bowl of soup and exhaling gently to cool it down. Alternatively, envisioning inhaling the energy of love and exhaling any negativity, offering it to the earth for release and renewal. This intentional breathing pattern, typically inhaling for 4-5 counts and exhaling for 8-10 counts, not only fosters emotional healing but also supports the nervous system in shifting into a state of rest and relaxation.

From a scientific perspective, this deliberate breathing pattern activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting restorative rest and relaxation. In contrast, fast, shallow breathing triggers the body’s stress response, plunging the nervous system into a state of heightened alertness and reactivity. By cultivating an atmosphere of love, grace, and compassion through conscious breathwork, we create an optimal environment for healing to unfold. In TranscenDance™, breath becomes the conduit through which we navigate the depths of our emotions, emerging lighter, freer, and more aligned with our true selves.

Incorporating conscious breathwork into our everyday lives extends far beyond the dance floor of TranscenDance™; it becomes a powerful tool for navigating life’s challenges with grace and resilience. Whether we’re facing moments of stress, anxiety, or simply seeking a moment of calm amidst the chaos, our breath serves as an ever-present anchor, grounding us in the present moment. By cultivating a regular breathwork practice, we empower ourselves to respond to life’s ups and downs with greater clarity, compassion, and equanimity. With each inhale and exhale, we tap into a wellspring of inner peace and strength, reminding ourselves that the power to find balance and serenity resides within us, waiting to be accessed at any moment. As we continue to harness the transformative potential of breath in our daily lives, we unlock the key to living with greater joy, authenticity, and purpose, one breath at a time.
