If you would love to become a life coach who gets paid to help others achieve their wildest dreams, and eventually do it full-time, you’re in the right place.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re trying to separate fact from fiction about this.
One site says the key to everything is being certified. But how come there are countless certified coaches earning no money?
Someone else swears you just need the right email funnel. But then, wouldn’t every coach just use that same funnel and succeed forever?
The honest truth is, many people who dream of becoming a life coach never pull it off.
Some succeed for a little while before stalling out. Others work with a few clients but grow no further. And many aspiring coaches literally never see a single client.
Here’s the great news, though: a small but growing number of people do figure out the way to earn a strong and sustainable income as a transformational life coach.
We know, because we’ve trained a lot of them ourselves. And we’ve created an Expert Q&A to give you a sense of what these successful coaches know that others don’t.Take these insights into consideration as you plot out your next moves to become a spiritual life coach!
“How do I know I’m ready to leave my 9–5 and become a life coach?”
A: The perfect time to transition out of your full time job and into coaching will be different for each person, but there are several clear signs that almost always mean it’s time for a shift:
- Increased Demand: When you have a waiting list of clients who you cannot see without freeing up more hours or your 9-5 is preventing you from growing your business further, you’re at a tipping point. This is a great time to ride the momentum and consider making a shift.
- Consistent Income: Your coaching business is generating revenue– it’s a business, not a hobby– and this revenue is enough for you to leave the comfort of your paycheck behind.
- Burnout and Stress: Your current job is harming your mental, emotional, or physical health. You know deep down that it isn’t sustainable for you to stay in the environment you’ve been working in.
- Your 9-5 Is No Longer Aligned: You don’t feel proud of your work, excited to accomplish more at your job, and your personal values compete with your employer’s. Put simply, staying at your current job isn’t helping you create the life you’d love!
If you resonate with any of the signs above, your soul could be calling for a change. But, rest assured, you don’t have to jump in all at once! One of the best parts of being a life coach is this: you can get started on the side, gain experience, build your client list, and only go full-time when you decide it makes clear professional sense.
With that in mind, feel free to let go of the common “all or nothing” myth where you can either have a W2 job or be a life coach.
The true question isn’t “when do I quit my 9-5” but rather “when do I know I’m ready to take the next step.”
If you feel unfulfilled in your day job, or you’re already mentoring others informally (i.e. if you’re the person everyone comes to for perspective), or you’re craving a more flexible lifestyle where work serves life rather than the other way around…
These are all excellent signs that a successful career as a life coach might be perfect.
You don’t need to make coaching your instant sole income stream to get started and create the option of a future full-time pivot.
If you’re not sure where to begin, we’ve got an excellent (and free) next step for you.

“What steps should I take before quitting my job to become a coach?”
A: When your desire for something different outweighs the comfort of the familiar.
Specific steps to make the leap can include:
- Having a Clear Vision Of Coaching Success. Do you actually dream of being a full-time coach? Or would a few clients on nights and weekends (a solid, heart-centered side income) be enough for you? There’s no right or wrong, but knowing your vision helps you take purposeful action to create it.
- The Power Of Deciding. A firm, no-going-back commitment to creating a successful coaching career is very powerful. Once that inner decision is made, you’ll start to naturally see opportunities to create the success you’ve declared for yourself.
- Receiving Mentorship From Successful Coaches. Once you have a clear vision and have truly decided to succeed as a life coach, the right mentors can be the make-or-break difference. Mentors who’ve actually been 6, 7, or even 8 figure coaches themselves. While other aspiring coaches fumble around with trial and error, you’ll start on day one with a proven, systematic approach that you KNOW works.
The question is: who are those trusted mentors who you can confidently listen to?
Lots of people are touting themselves as life coaching experts these days who’ve not actually had much personal success or experience in coaching!
On the other hand, when you work with proven coaches who are not just good at delivering coaching but know how to create a financially viable, long-term coaching career, it can massively speed up your success.
If you’re interested in that kind of mentorship, you’re in luck.
You can attend our Free 5-Day Life Coach Challenge, starting right now, and get a closer look “under the hood” of what it actually takes to create a successful life coaching career.
You’ll be surrounded by expert mentors who are 7 and 8 figure coaches themselves, plus a supportive community of other serious aspiring coaches.
By the end of our 5 days together, you’ll have a much clearer sense of when it would make sense to leave your job to take your coaching career to the next level!
“How long does it take to become a full-time life coach?”
A: Short answer: most new coaches transition within 6-12 months of their decision to start a life coach business.
The longer answer involves asking yourself a few key questions:
- How much time are you able to dedicate to training, marketing, and client acquisition? You can absolutely learn these things in your spare time while holding down a job, but the more time you consciously make for it, the faster your coaching career will “click” and start to work.
- Do you have a proven system of support and accountability? It’s one thing to watch a bunch of videos about coaching that you patchwork together. It’s another thing entirely to have a complete, start-to-finish system for how all the different pieces of a successful coaching career fit together and actually work. Without that, you may spend more time experimenting to find the formula that lets you go full-time on coaching.
- How important is it to you to go full-time? Not every coach defines success as “this replaces my full-time job right away.” And there’s nothing wrong with that. However, in our experience, those who are driven to go full-time quickly are the ones who successfully do so.
There is no simple formula that can say: “This is how long it takes to go full-time. Right here. This exact date on the calendar circled in red.”
In our experience, the coaches who get there the fastest have a proven system, with structures of support and accountability that increase the odds of replacing their 9-5 income in under a year.
These are the kinds of coaches who do not wish to trial-and-error their way through challenges that we can simply hand them the proven answers to. As a result, they waste less time, move more quickly and confidently, and earn a significant income sooner.
“How do I become a life coach without becoming certified?”
A: Becoming a life coach without certification starts with three skills:
- Know how to reprogram limiting beliefs. Can you sit across from someone with gnawing problems, or heartfelt dreams…pinpoint the limiting beliefs that are keeping them stuck…and actually help that person reprogram those beliefs so they can make progress? With or without a certification, this one skill is the core of a coaching career.
- Know how to work with Universal spiritual laws. In the same way that a pilot needs to understand the laws of aerodynamics, or an electrician needs to know the laws of electricity, an aspiring coach needs to understand the Universal laws that govern how human beings think, act, and transform. The timeless truths that are the same today as they were in Ancient Rome. If you master these laws, you can make it as a coach even without certification.
- Master the art of asking evocative questions. Great coaching is about drawing people out of their habitual, reflexive ways of thinking so they can glimpse inspiring new possibilities for their lives. The better you are at asking breakthrough questions that make a client think differently, the more effective you’ll be at creating transformation, whether you have a certification or not.
Certification isn’t legally required. There are plenty of successful life coaches who aren’t certified. Can you become one of them? Very possibly.
The true question, though, isn’t “can I be successful without certification.” It’s actually this: “how much longer will it take to become successful on my own?”
We’ve met lots of coaches who got certified by other places where that’s pretty much ALL they were taught.
No one ever truly showed them how the business side of coaching works: marketing, referrals, client attraction and retention, actually earning a profit.
What’s more, the business side of coaching is deeply tied to your “why” for becoming a life coach at all. Unlike other certification programs, we don’t separate the two.
Now, with all of that having been said, maybe you’re considering whether to become a life coach without certification.
If that’s you, check out this video from Mat Boggs, our co-founder who also happens to be an 8-figure coach himself.
“What type of life coach should I be?”
A: How you choose to generate income in your life coaching business is ultimately up to you. There are no right or wrong answers!
With that said, here are some helpful guardrails:
- What Problem You’ll Help Clients Solve. Life coaches are in the business of helping people move through obstacles and into better chapters of their lives. Before you decide on a niche for your coaching practice, pause and ask yourself: what challenges do I genuinely feel drawn to help people navigate? And what kind of future do I feel excited about helping them build? Get concrete. Practicality can come later. Passion and clarity should come first.
- Which Clients You’re Passionate About Helping. Once you’re clear on the kinds of challenges you most want to help solve, turn your attention to the people themselves. Who do you feel genuinely drawn to serve? Consider the qualities, values, life experiences, and ambitions that light you up. What kind of person do you naturally understand? Who would you feel honored and energized to support? Focus on where there’s real resonance—where your perspective, skills, and lived experience would make you a powerful match.
- The Skills, Expertise, And Personal Experiences You Already Have. You don’t need to invent a wildly original coaching concept to build a thriving practice. In fact, you’re far better off starting with what’s already in your hands. Look at the strengths, experiences, and wisdom you’ve accumulated.
Ask yourself: What problems do people already turn to me for help with? What skills—personal or professional—do I consistently bring to the table? What advice do friends, colleagues, or clients ask me for again and again? Your most powerful coaching foundation is likely hiding in plain sight.
Once you’ve really marinated on these questions, the choice of what kind of coach to be should become a lot clearer.
If you’re the one helping people word the perfect text to their crush, or navigate through a tough dating challenge, you might make a great relationship coach.
Take an honest look at what you have to offer and then try being the kind of coach who helps people navigate those kinds of issues.
“What should my services, offerings, and prices be?”
A: How you choose to generate income in your life coaching business is ultimately up to you.
With that said, here are some helpful guardrails:
- Offer Structured Coaching Programs. Build your business around a well-defined coaching framework. A thoughtfully designed program not only attracts clients who are serious about investing in their growth, but it also creates greater financial consistency and stability for you as a coach.
At Brave Thinking Institute, we equip our coaches with the tools and training to confidently enroll clients into our established coaching programs and deliver them with excellence. Time and again, we’ve seen that leveraging a proven structure dramatically increases success and sustainability. - Create Multiple Revenue Streams. Expand your offerings instead of relying on just one pathway. Many coaches discover that blending several income streams creates both creative fulfillment and financial resilience. You might lead a transformational three-month group experience, support a few private clients who want more individualized guidance, and even author a book to share your message more broadly.
- Establish Clear Agreements. Set expectations upfront with a clear coaching agreement. A written contract ensures that both you and your clients understand the scope, structure, and commitments involved. Whether you’re offering private sessions, group programs, or other services, clarity fosters trust.
Prioritize transparent communication and professional integrity in every engagement — it protects both your business and the transformation you’re facilitating.
Many new coaches default to offering only one-on-one sessions, which can quietly lock you into a pattern of trading hours for income.
When your revenue depends entirely on how many calls you can fit into a day, your earning potential is capped by your calendar.
Over time, that model can feel more draining than freeing. It’s also easy to fall into constant experimentation (tweaking offers, changing packages, reinventing your process) without a clear, proven framework to guide your clients from where they are to where they want to be.
Building your coaching business shouldn’t feel like endless trial and error. With a thoughtful, repeatable approach, you can create results more consistently, for both your clients and yourself.
“How should I structure my actual coaching business?”
A: There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are some helpful guidelines:
- Set up the foundation of your business. Decide on a name, choose a legal structure, and register your coaching practice if you feel ready to do so. While you can technically begin coaching without formally registering, putting the right structure in place can help protect your personal assets and create a stronger long-term foundation. Many new coaches choose between operating as a Sole Proprietorship or forming an LLC, depending on their goals and comfort level.
- Put the right protections in place. Insurance isn’t mandatory when you’re starting out, but it’s often a wise investment. As a coach, you’re offering guidance that can impact people’s lives in meaningful ways See this list of options.
- Map out your financial plan and essential tools. Launching a coaching business doesn’t have to break the bank (especially with today’s technology) but there are usually some upfront costs to consider. Outline your expected expenses and make sure you have the basics covered: a dependable way to host sessions (virtual or in person), a platform where potential clients can learn about you, and a simple system for scheduling and managing appointments.
- Learn from mentors who’ve already done it. One of the smartest moves you can make is finding a mentor who has built the kind of coaching business you want. Instead of navigating every decision through trial and error, you can benefit from someone else’s experience, shortcuts, and hard-won lessons. The right mentor can accelerate your progress and help you avoid costly missteps.

“How do I overcome imposter syndrome to become a full-time coach?”
A: By remembering that every coach you follow online was once brand new, too.
It’s natural to question your skills as you get started, but keep these things in mind:
- You Don’t Need To Know Everything. No client expects their coach to be omniscient, and have every single answer in their brain. They are looking for a trusted advisor who can expand their thinking and get them to see their goals or challenges in a new, elevated way that makes new outcomes possible. You can do that, right?
- Think Of Who You’ve Helped Already. Maybe you’re a brand new coach who’s yet to see even a single paying client. Totally fine! Think back to the friend who you helped get a new job. Or the family member you talked to through their health challenges. Think of anyone who would honestly be able to say that your presence made a meaningful difference in their life. That’s coaching. Now, it’s just time to do it with more people and get paid!
- You Don’t Have To Do It Alone. You might be surprised to find out that even many proven, elite coaches have coaches themselves. Very few people make life coaching a career all by themselves, sitting in a coffee shop and strategizing with venn diagrams. Mentorship is available, and it can dramatically shorten your learning curve and timeline for success.
Overcoming imposter syndrome doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen, and we’re here to help!
