People have all sorts of ideas about what they want.
But one thing a life coach must be aware of is the fact that many of these desires aren’t what your clients truly long for.
What do I mean by that?
“I want this job.”
“I want that much income.”
“I want this kind of relationship.”
In many cases, what your client says they want isn’t their real wish, but a means by which they think their true desire can be obtained.
For example, a person may say they want a relationship, when what they truly need is the love, safety and acceptance they don’t know how to give to themselves.
This person probably isn’t aware that there is a difference; they believe instead, that if they can just get that ideal boyfriend or girlfriend, then all of the pain, fear, loneliness and insecurity they feel will simply melt away.
Sadly, this hope is often proven wrong.
They may attract the significant other they’ve been hoping for, but the problems that caused them to be lonely and unhappy will follow them into the relationship, leaving them in just as much pain as they were in before, and possibly even causing them to sabotage their new-found love.
So how does client behavior influence the way you behave as a coach?
This knowledge affects you in two ways: how you coach your existing clients, and how you attract new ones.
1. How it affects your coaching:
It’s vital that you learn how to hear the needs beneath your client’s surface desires.
It does you nor your client any good to help them obtain something they think will make their lives better, only for them to acquire it and discover that they’re still as unhappy as they were before.
In fact, it will do more harm than good. It will lead them to think that your coaching doesn’t help, and it can make them feel that real happiness is completely out of reach.
Instead, find out what your client really desires, and use that as the basis to help them form plans and goals that will bring them what they truly want and long for.
2. How it affects your marketing:
One of the core principles of marketing is to stir your client’s emotions. People buy for emotional reasons; logic merely justifies what their heart has already decided.
When you’re able to figure out what your client truly longs for beneath their surface desires, you’ll know how to give them hope that their real needs can be met.
You can then connect with the feelings that will inspire them to invest, which enables you to help more people create the lives they’ve been dreaming of.
