Jennifer Jimenez
Welcome to the Abundant Coach podcast. In this episode, we are going to be talking about coaching beyond the mind, the power of movement to create breakthroughs. My name is Jennifer Joy Jiménez. I am one of the co-founders of Brave Thinking Institute, the premier center for transformational training and coaching. I also run the health and Wellbeing division of Brave Thinking Institute, where I’ve codified a movement modality called Transcend Dance that can help people and has helped tens of thousands overcome fear and create extraordinary results.
00;01;11;05 – 00;01;39;00
Jennifer Jimenez
And we are going to be talking today about the power of movement, and specifically how Transcend Dance can help you and the clients that you serve unlock powerful breakthroughs. If you’ve ever coached a client through the fear of failure, or if, course, if you’ve faced it yourself, this episode will give you a complete new tool. And you don’t have to be a coach.
00;01;39;05 – 00;02;04;19
Jennifer Jimenez
You don’t have to be a health coach or even a fitness instructor to harness the body’s wisdom in your coaching. Whether you’re coaching yourself through something challenging, a loved one around you, a team member, or of course, for those who aren’t coaches, this is going to be a powerful, powerful episode. So get ready to learn how to move beyond blocks.
00;02;04;19 – 00;02;38;26
Jennifer Jimenez
Literally. Now why the body holds blocks. Let’s talk a little bit about this. The body is more than just this physical vessel, this bag of bones. Right? It is an archive of unprocessed emotion. Thoughts and feelings live not just in our minds, but they are embedded in our nervous system, in our soma, the muscles, our whole entire system, our posture, our breath, how we move through life.
00;02;38;29 – 00;03;22;12
Jennifer Jimenez
All of these patterns are encoded in the soma in the body and emotional energy. I love the the way to break down emotion. It’s energy in motion. And let me just say it this way if it isn’t expressed, it actually gets suppressed, which becomes unskilled behavior like resistance, procrastination, self-doubt, self-criticism, fear, all of the things that can either hold us back or the clients that we serve, and movement and specific types of movement can actually help access and release what the mind is trying to solve logically.
00;03;22;14 – 00;03;53;13
Jennifer Jimenez
But it can’t. And when we’re in fight, flight, freeze, or these different somatic responses, you can’t think your way to a new result as much as you or your clients have. The desire and every intention of taking an action that is wanting to move you in the direction of a goal or a vision. So often if we don’t address the subconscious which lives in the body, we’re never going to see the results that we would love.
00;03;53;18 – 00;04;23;25
Jennifer Jimenez
So if you’ve ever had a client, or if you yourself has ever said, I don’t know why, I feel stuck. Oftentimes it’s because it’s in the body. So let’s talk about why movement accelerates breakthroughs. Now, specifically, the modality that I have created over 25 years ago called transcendence, that today has helped literally tens of thousands of people all over the world.
00;04;23;28 – 00;04;49;27
Jennifer Jimenez
I created this to help people, including my own self, and some of my own issues, shift from the mental chatter that we get into in our minds, into embodied empowerment, so that we can move forward in our goals and our vision and live our dreams. Now, this type of movement, why it’s so helpful is number one, it doesn’t require choreography.
00;04;49;29 – 00;05;19;11
Jennifer Jimenez
It’s not about fitness. It actually doesn’t even require music. Although music can be very helpful, just the willingness to move with intention. The other powerful thing about this is it is available to all mobility levels. So whether someone’s totally sedentary, they use a wheelchair, they’re healing from a surgery, or they have different types of abilities, they can do this.
00;05;19;13 – 00;05;49;01
Jennifer Jimenez
Now here’s why this is so powerful. Movement opens up our energy flow. It creates a space where deeper truths and insights and courage can naturally rise up for us. It’s not a logical or intellectual process. It really comes from a much deeper place. Now, when we’re able to tap into this energy, this energy helps dissolve the fear of failure.
00;05;49;07 – 00;06;30;23
Jennifer Jimenez
Now, when we’re in fear, we get into fight or flight. Breeze, you know, all the things that keep us from actually taking that action so that we enter into this experience, not through the mindset of fixing, but through energetic releasing. So for coaches, or if you’re wanting to be a coach or you know that you coach yourself or your loved ones through challenging times, you can use movement to help your clients and yourself and loved ones move from overthinking and or feeling stuck or feeling confused into aligned action.
00;06;30;26 – 00;06;57;24
Jennifer Jimenez
That actually takes us into, of course, the land of our dreams, where we’re creating the results that we would love. So I just want to share with you a little bit about how this all came about. My own personal story in a real short version. So I discovered the power of movement, particularly during a time in my life when I was doing all of the other things affirmations, visualization, journaling, all of that.
00;06;57;24 – 00;07;24;01
Jennifer Jimenez
And I grew up. My mother is a thought leader. She is the founder of Brave Thinking Institute. Her name is Mary Morrissey. So I learned a lot of this growing up, and I was really believing in this one particular vision that I had in my life. And this was in my early 20s. But what happened for me was that my body was holding on to a lot of restriction and a lot of fear.
00;07;24;04 – 00;07;53;20
Jennifer Jimenez
So there’s fear and resistance and control that I was holding in my body, created this resistance energy, and I was seeking to control my outer results without even realizing. One of the very first experiences of this was when I created my whole dream of having a natural labor and birth. And I used all the tools that I thought would help me with that a vision, visualization classes, coaching, all of those things.
00;07;53;20 – 00;08;20;17
Jennifer Jimenez
And yet I created a very different result. And so later I realized that this resistance energy not only created my 50 hour labor and birth, which was not my my dream or vision, I was also living on money struggle mode. Way back in the day. I was in a no pain, no gain control relationship with my body and I wasn’t owning my full power or living my purpose.
00;08;20;20 – 00;08;48;22
Jennifer Jimenez
Now here’s what I learned through that birth experience. Often time our mess becomes our mission or our failures are the doorways into our greatest learning and success. After that, I got very, very hungry and thirsty to learn everything I could about the mind body, spirit connection. And I stumbled on conscious dance. I’d always loved dancing. I was a professional dancer in my early career, and so it made a lot of sense.
00;08;48;22 – 00;09;19;15
Jennifer Jimenez
But I also found energy, medicine and very powerful somatic release tools, and that helped me to release old patterns of control, perfectionism, and fear of not getting it right. And that control restriction energy. And I took many classes. I studied with the best, I became certified and trained, and what I ended up doing was, of course, joining forces with my mother here at the Brave Thinking Institute.
00;09;19;18 – 00;09;44;01
Jennifer Jimenez
But I also took everything I learned and created a modality not only to help myself transform, but everyone around me that really wanted to unlock and unleash the power of the Soma, the healing power of the mind body connection. And I created Transcend Dance. That was over 25 years ago. Some of the results I’ve been able to create since then is very quickly.
00;09;44;07 – 00;10;11;06
Jennifer Jimenez
I did have two more children. I had my dream births, a two hour birth, a 90 minute birth, all natural. Today I live in abundance. So no more struggle money mode, no more struggle money mode. I live in financial abundance. I run a multi-million dollar business of my dreams coaching business of my dreams, where I’ve blended my love of health and well-being, transformational spiritual principles.
00;10;11;08 – 00;10;50;23
Jennifer Jimenez
And this love of conscious dance. And I have a beautiful relationship with my body now, where I love and care for my body and I own my power. I’m standing in my strength, living my true purpose. So if some of these results sound really great to you, and maybe you’re somebody where you already are living a really good life and you’re looking to live that extraordinary, that amazing life, you’re going to want to hear some of the tools that I’ll be sharing with you in this episode, just this modality alone has shifted everything in my life how I coach, how I create and how I lead.
00;10;50;25 – 00;11;21;11
Jennifer Jimenez
And what’s fantastic is I also launched a transcend Dance facilitator training. So alongside our coach certification training that we deliver here at Brave Thinking Institute, where our coaches that really want to have a specialty in somatic healing and mind body spirit connection, they add a transcendence facilitator training, and they bring these two things together and they create extraordinary results with their clients.
00;11;21;13 – 00;11;50;17
Jennifer Jimenez
So let’s unpack some movement examples that you can begin to use right away in your life as well as with your clients. Now again, this is super helpful when you or your clients are experiencing things like I feel stuck. I can’t get myself to take action. You are undervaluing the actions you’re taking and you hear yourself say things like, why do I never take action on my dreams?
00;11;50;17 – 00;12;18;27
Jennifer Jimenez
And or maybe you’re picking a fight with your spouse or loved ones, or you’re just feeling really confused about which action to take next. That’s a sign that you’re in. Fight light. Freeze. Flee. You know it is. Fear response. So there are four movements and I have a whole longer list, but I’m going to unpack four powerful movements that are super simple, surprisingly simple, yet they’re highly effective.
00;12;18;29 – 00;12;42;21
Jennifer Jimenez
So the first movement, if you’re in frozen, where you feel stuck and you notice that you’ve been procrastinating on something that you know you want to do where you know it would be good for you, but you’re not doing it, you want to actually stand up. Now, you can also do this sitting, and you want to shake your body out like you’re shaking out an old dusty rug shake your hands to the earth, shake your head down to the earth.
00;12;42;27 – 00;13;10;00
Jennifer Jimenez
Shake up and down your spine. Shake out your legs like you’re dusting off an old rug or your dog shaking water off of its hair. Right? Or fur. Now what happens here is it disrupts this stagnant, stuck energy and the nervous tension in your body, and it helps you and your clients move through fear and anxiety and actually release that energy very quickly.
00;13;10;02 – 00;13;34;20
Jennifer Jimenez
The second movement pattern is for people that are in a bit of fight mode, like they get real defensive, right? And everything’s really tight and tense. You can feel yourself tensing up and resisting your in resistance energy, right? You’ve been triggered by something and you feel yourself resisting. So one movement pattern that quickly and simply shifts that energy is breath and stretching.
00;13;34;22 – 00;13;59;12
Jennifer Jimenez
Right. Because as much as we want to try to think our way out of that, oftentimes when we’re in freeze or we’re in fight mode, just thinking isn’t enough. So you want to lengthen your spine. You want to receive a deep breath in through the nose. It’ll sound like this. Breathing in. Exhale gently out through your mouth, fogging a mirror or like you’re blowing out through a straw.
00;13;59;12 – 00;14;23;24
Jennifer Jimenez
I like the mirror. Now this. Expand your lung capacity. Then you want to create some space. You can literally just stretch your arms out, make a big X with your body. So when you’re in, fight the tension. Pull your body inwards. Think about grabbing your, you know, your fists and making fists and kind of putting your fists up like a boxer would do.
00;14;24;01 – 00;14;47;28
Jennifer Jimenez
So this is the opposite of that. You open your hands, you stretch your body nice and big and wide, right. And that’s going to immediately shift the energy. It creates space also for insight, presence and calm decision making. Our movement pattern number three is if you’re in confusion mode right where you’re like, I don’t know, should I do this or should I do that?
00;14;47;28 – 00;15;15;20
Jennifer Jimenez
And you literally you’re in a this anxiety cycle in your mind. So the movement pattern when you’re in overdrive right. You can’t quiet the mind. Right. It’s like this monkey mind that’s just bouncing all over the walls and that’s creating confusion. So then you feel stuck, right? So something that’s really powerful is sacred stillness. Now, this isn’t stillness scrolling on your phone, or is stillness watching a Netflix.
00;15;15;20 – 00;15;50;09
Jennifer Jimenez
You know, where you’re distract it in stillness. Sacred stillness is where you literally just grab a yoga mat or a blanket. You can even create quiet energy, can put on some headphones and listen to some really powerful meditation music, or do a guided meditation. But this sort of micro move, right? Or a mind full pause is going to teach you and your clients to listen within and not just receive input from the outer world, but just take a few deep breaths.
00;15;50;11 – 00;16;15;11
Jennifer Jimenez
Really connect with the earth. Connect with the spirit breathing. You remember the truth that is right here and right now that you are a powerful, beautiful spiritual being. Having a human experience and the power breathing you is far more powerful and you contain more potential than any circumstance, situation or condition. And then you just get silent. Just focus on your inhale.
00;16;15;14 – 00;16;51;13
Jennifer Jimenez
Focus on your exhale. It’s so powerful. Our movement pattern number four is if you’re in this cycle, you feel like you’re being negative. Now this requires metacognition and we call that notice what you’re noticing. If you notice the topic of conversation is complaining or comparing or you know you’re in this negativity spiral, or you’re looking at all of the things that isn’t going right in your life or that you’re not doing right, and that’s causing a sense of feeling stuck, like you’re not having the forward movement that you would love.
00;16;51;15 – 00;17;28;24
Jennifer Jimenez
Then the movement pattern is what we call free form movement within tension with intention. Now, in transcendence, there’s actually ten stages of transcendence, and I’ve actually been walking you through some of those stages. So freeze is stage five, right? Stretching is literally stage two and three. Stillness is stage ten. Now this free form movement where you’re going to let your body lead you, is stage five of transcendence.
00;17;28;24 – 00;17;58;06
Jennifer Jimenez
And that’s where you just play a real melodic piece of music. You can also do this without music, but I love to use music that just inspires me to move my body. Drumming can also be really helpful, especially for the dance of shift where you’re shaking your body out, ultimately where you let your body lead. It’s like unthinking a garden hose or this stuck energy that can really gravitate into tension in your neck, tightness in your spine, a locked hip, a locked shoulder.
00;17;58;06 – 00;18;33;11
Jennifer Jimenez
This is not just a physiological response. This is stuck energy in your body. So literally just moving your body. Think about spirals, the spiral of the DNA, gentle circular movement. Imagine you’re moving through molasses or flowing under water. It feels even literally just 3 to 4 minutes of letting your wrist circle, letting your head circle, rolling those shoulders back, undulating the spine, making some circular movements with the hips, letting your feet meander through the space.
00;18;33;11 – 00;18;58;05
Jennifer Jimenez
As you’re doing these movements and breathing. Most importantly, and feeling you are moving energy. And I can’t even begin to tell you how many coaches we coach. Thousands of coaches all over the world with certified over 5000 coaches will come into a transcendent session, and they will say things like, I’ve been confused, I’ve been stuck, I’ve been procrastinating, I haven’t been moving forward.
00;18;58;05 – 00;19;37;16
Jennifer Jimenez
And literally, I came to your one transcendent session, started to move this energy. And I immediately felt inspired, motivated, ignited. And I literally got more done in the next 48 hours than I had achieved the the previous entire six months leading up to that. That is a powerful result, my friends. So, so powerful. It just goes to show that when you get the body in to movement, it literally moves energy and then you have more energy to access to move towards your goals, your dreams, whatever it is that you are working towards, including, of course, your clients.
00;19;37;19 – 00;20;05;29
Jennifer Jimenez
Now you might be wondering, okay, this is great, Jennifer and Brave Thinking Institute, but how do I introduce this into my coaching business or into my life? So I’ll give you some clues and some tips here on this one. So when to use this number one is right after a success or a breakthrough, you can actually move your body in celebratory ways to anchor this new normal in your nervous system.
00;20;06;05 – 00;20;30;17
Jennifer Jimenez
Just play a song like celebrate like buy cool in the gang and allow yourself to celebrate and memorize that energy. And that’s going to anchor it into your body. Now, of course, I’ve already shared when you when you or your client feels stuck or emotionally flat, like if you’re feeling just real kind of ho hum, you know, like I’m not feeling inspired today.
00;20;30;19 – 00;20;51;23
Jennifer Jimenez
That’s when you can turn on some music or just do this in general. You can do the shaking, you can do the stretching, you can do the body part dance and then a little stillness even, and listen. And then all of a sudden you’re connected to your higher source, not just your human thoughts, and you feel more inspired and connected.
00;20;51;23 – 00;21;20;19
Jennifer Jimenez
The other thing that it does, by the way, movement in this way activates your happy hormones dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins, which is like the best, even way better antidepressant that you might ever or somebody might, you know, be taking. There’s actually some really profound new studies. There’s been studies for decades on the power of dance in general, for health, for longevity, for mental health, for physical health.
00;21;20;19 – 00;21;50;14
Jennifer Jimenez
All the things that we would love. But particularly as of late, more studies are doing comparison around size and movement and dance and dance outperforms exercise with exercise. Just dance alone. It’s amazing. So another way to introduce your clients or yourself to movement is at the very beginning of your coaching session. It’s actually one of the ways that I really love to bring it in.
00;21;50;17 – 00;22;12;15
Jennifer Jimenez
Either a will do, a little stillness, and I’ll take us through that deep breathing process. Right? Or I’ll have client stand and we’ll do three minutes of a body part dance, right? Just playfully moving to get the energy moving or in the middle of a session. If we’ve been sitting for quite some time, the other is to shift their state.
00;22;12;18 – 00;22;35;14
Jennifer Jimenez
So if you can tell they’re in a fear loop or they’re overly intellectualizing it or overthinking it, or they really, truly have been very stuck. I get up with my clients in a session, will hit a piece of music, and will literally move that energy together. I also use movement to anchor vision, so I have some powerful songs like one of my favorites.
00;22;35;14 – 00;22;59;01
Jennifer Jimenez
You’re More than welcome to borrow or use. It is the Gladiator song. The Gladiator soundtrack has some really epic, inspirational music, so I’ll play that song and will bring to mind the vision and the goals that the client has, and will literally move our bodies through space to five senses arise that vision. It’s so fun. It feels so good.
00;22;59;03 – 00;23;24;21
Jennifer Jimenez
Now, what might you say out loud to help your client gently begin to, you know, understand that we’re going to move. So here’s one sentence that you can use to gently introduce movement to your clients and your practice. The first is let’s try something somatic to help you feel into this right? Or to help you shift your energy.
00;23;24;24 – 00;23;51;25
Jennifer Jimenez
Another sentences. Would you be open to exploring how this might live in your body and how we can move this energy? I love that that evocative question. You can also use simple language like, let’s just take a deep breath and shake off what’s not yours to carry. They can do that seated or let’s we could stand and we’re just going to shake it off like we’re shaking water off of a dog’s back or shaking out an old dusty rug.
00;23;51;25 – 00;24;17;03
Jennifer Jimenez
All the tension, all the stress. Let’s just shake it loose. It’s a great, super simple introductory sentence. Now, if a client feels awkward or you notice they’re resistant, there’s a couple things you can do to really help. The first is to normalize it, you know, to let people know or let your client know. Many people feel a little bit self-conscious or awkward, and then you want to use curiosity instead of perfectionism.
00;24;17;03 – 00;24;43;16
Jennifer Jimenez
You can say, you know what? There’s no right or wrong way to do this, so you can’t get it wrong. Just those two things can really help ease any concern or, you know, feelings of discomfort or resistance. You also want to keep it really short. Just say, you know, we’re just going to do this for 30 seconds. So if they know that feeling a little bit awkward is normal, they know they can’t get it wrong and that you’re just inviting them to do this for 30s or a couple of really short minutes.
00;24;43;19 – 00;25;09;21
Jennifer Jimenez
I give it a 99% chance. They’re going to want to lean into trying this. And you can just say, this is really, really effective, right? This is a proven technique to really shift energy. And that also helps. What can you expect as a coach that’s bringing some of this somatic movement into your practice? A few things. Number one, your client might laugh, they might cry, they might have unexpected memories come or rise to the surface.
00;25;09;24 – 00;25;30;14
Jennifer Jimenez
By the way, that’s super normal because the body is processing and releasing. What I find is that it’s usually just a wave that rises. It’s nothing for them or you to be afraid of. Just breathe through it. Notice what you’re feeling, and then focus on the outcome that you would love. I would love to feel motivated. I would love to connect with love.
00;25;30;14 – 00;25;58;16
Jennifer Jimenez
I would love to connect with my vision. You always want to create it. Container of safety with permission and then integration. So one of my favorite ways to integrate is literally after we’ve done the movement, place one hand on the heart, the other hand below the belly button, and just breathe in and out several times and just integrate before you move back into left brain cognitive conversation.
00;25;58;16 – 00;26;30;00
Jennifer Jimenez
Even if your client wants to start talking immediately, I would pause them and just, you know, we’ll get to that. Let’s just pause here. Let’s just receive a few deep breaths just to really ground what has just shifted for us. Right. So, so, so powerful. So in closing, I just want to say if this information, if today’s episode has opened your eyes to the transformational power of movement, I’m going to highly recommend that you subscribe to our podcast if you haven’t yet.
