Tune Into Your Still Small Voice To Release Doubts, Stop Second-Guessing Your Path And Start Building Your Dreams

Some moments change the entire trajectory of your life.

This was one of those.

I was a senior in college, 22 years old, sitting at a rickety desk that I made out of cinder blocks. On top of it, I had 2 applications:

One was for medical school, and the other for the graduate school of education to become a teacher.

Two completely different life paths staring me in the eye.

I was graduating pre-med, I had taken my MCATS, had my recommendations. It was all set; I was on track to go to medical school. I had dedicated four years of my life to this path. It was the logical choice.

And yet, there was a part of me that wanted to become a teacher. It was my passion.

But when I looked up how much teachers make, and compared it to how much doctors earn – the difference was significant. I knew that someday I would like to have a family, raise kids, and I wanted to be able to provide for them.

So I painfully decided to put my calling aside.

However, all throughout my college years, my still small voice whispered to me: “teacher.”

I kept squashing it down, resisting it, pushing it away…

Until that day.

I felt fear in the pit of my stomach. My inner voice was louder than ever, thundering at me.

At that moment, I called my mom, Mary Morrissey.

I said “Hey mom, I know that you’ve put me through the last four years of pre-med school… and yet I’m feeling this calling to shift choices right now. I feel called to be a teacher. Would you be mad at me if I decided to become a teacher instead of a doctor?”

There was a long, silent pause on the phone.

Then she said, “Mat, I’ll give you the advice that my father gave me when I was at a very important crossroads in my life: Do what gives you life. Do what feels expansive.”

The moment she said that, I knew.

I crumbled the medical school application and threw it in the trash. I filled out the education application and sent it off.

Three weeks later, I’m on a spiritual pilgrimage with Mary in India. Halfway through this experience, our guide says “I have an opportunity for four of you to meet with a real life yogi. He’ll read your aura and tell you what the colors mean.”

My mom and I looked at each other and said yes.

Then this guy led us through a little village – narrow pathways, dirt roads, the smell of curry being cooked inside people’s homes…

Until we reached a small house, and we walked up to the rooftop through an outer stairwell.

The yogi was waiting for us there – a man in his sixties, all dressed in white, sitting on a plastic chair. I felt a shock of fear going through my body. “What if he tells me something that makes me doubt my decision of becoming a teacher?” I thought to myself.

I wanted to opt out. Instead, I decided to let the others go first and tell me if this guy was for real, so I could make my decision.

The first person went to meet him, sat in front of the yogi, and closed their eyes. The yogi placed the palm of his hand on their forehead for a short while, removed his hand, and started naming all the colors of their aura –red, blue, and green– and what each color meant.

The first person walked away inspired and deeply moved by the experience.

So did the second.

Mary was next. And when she came back and whispered to me, “Mat, this man is the real deal,” I decided to take my chances.

I begrudgingly sat in the chair in front of him. I was not open; I was almost defiant. Even as he placed his hand on my forehead, I crossed my arms and kept my eyes open, bracing for impact.

When he removed his hand from my forehead, he said: “Young man, your aura is yellow.”
“Okay, yellow… and?” I asked.

“No, that’s it. Pure yellow,” he replied.

I was already regretting my decision. I felt “aura-deficient” – up to that point, everyone’s aura had many colors, and I felt I was falling short.

He continued, “Young man, yellow is the color of a teacher. What do you plan on doing with your life?”

I felt a lump build in my throat. My eyes filled with tears.

“It’s amazing you say that, sir, because I just enrolled in the graduate school of education to become a teacher.”

I’ll never forget what happened next.

He shook my hand, pulled me closer, and said, “Good job. Way to listen.”

That pivotal moment in my life showed me how transformative listening to your still small voice is.

But you don’t have to go to India to find out what it’s telling you, and how to tune into its guidance.

If you’re looking to step into your purpose but feel confused, keep reading, because you’ll discover how to listen to your inner voice, get clarity about next steps, and find your calling.

How To Decode The Messages Of Your Still Small Voice

Have you ever found yourself going through the motions of life—one to-do list after another, meeting deadlines, chasing promotions—only to hit your pillow at night and wonder…

“Is this really it?”

You’ve followed the rules. Checked the boxes. Built the career, raised the family, kept the peace. But somewhere along the way, between all the deadlines, grocery lists, and school pickups, a little voice started whispering: “There’s more.”

It’s not that your life is bad — but somewhere along the way, you lost touch with yourself. Your dreams, your purpose, and the life you were truly meant to live.

You’re questioning everything about your life, and after all these years, you’re not even sure that you’re in the right career anymore.

There’s a part of you that longs for something deeper. Something more meaningful. More alive.

Maybe you’ve asked yourself questions like:

“What’s my true purpose?”

“Am I meant to do something more with my life?”

That’s your still small voice.

If you’ve been feeling that quiet nudge—or maybe even a full-on wake-up call—that something more is waiting for you… know this:

It’s not too late.

In fact, this might be the moment you’ve been waiting for.

The good news? You don’t need to have it all figured out right now. You just need a starting point.

That’s where these 11 self-reflection exercises come in. They will help you get clear on your purpose and take the first steps toward fulfilling your potential — maybe even as a transformational life coach.

They’re simple, doable tools to help you break through overthinking, shake off procrastination, and reconnect with your purpose—so you can move forward with clarity, confidence, and a sense of direction.

Let’s begin by understanding why self-reflection is so powerful in the first place.

What Self-Reflection Really Is… And Why It Matters

Most of us aren’t making daily time for self-reflection exercises and self-discovery. But, when was the last time you gave yourself space to pause, reflect, and really listen to what’s going on inside of you—not what others expect, but what YOU actually want?

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get disconnected. And for many of us (especially those juggling work, raising kids, and managing a home), time for self reflection feels like a luxury.

But truthfully, it’s a necessity—especially if you want to live a purpose-driven life.

Here’s the thing: self discovery activities aren’t about becoming self-centered. They’re about becoming more self-aware so you can make conscious choices instead of running on autopilot.

In short, self-discovery is the key that unlocks and amplifies your capacity to listen to your still small voice. And taking the time to engage in intentional self-reflection exercises help you do just that.

When you increase self awareness, you start to:

  • Understand what drives your decisions and behaviors
  • Identify patterns, both helpful and unhelpful
  • Recognize negative thoughts without letting them define you
  • Gain clarity on your core desires and values
  • Make empowered, aligned decisions in all areas of your life

It’s like holding up a mirror—not to judge, but to see yourself clearly and compassionately.

And that clarity? It’s the gateway to discovering your calling and fulfilling your true potential—critical when you’re thinking about making a mid-life career change.

Now, let’s get into the 11 self-reflection exercises that can support you in doing just that.

11 Powerful Self-Reflection Exercises to Increase Self-Awareness And Find Your Calling

Self-Reflection Exercise #1: Future Self Meditation

Find a quiet space. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply.

Now, imagine yourself five or ten years from now—living a life aligned with your true purpose. What are you doing each day? How do you feel when you wake up? Who are you spending time with? What are people thanking you for?

This isn’t just daydreaming—it’s a way of listening to your intuition.

How this exercise helps you: Connects you to your inner wisdom and the vision of your highest self.

Self-Reflection Exercise #2: Journaling Prompts

Grab a notebook and let your thoughts flow. Start with questions like:

“When do I feel most alive?”

“What lights me up?”

“What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?”

Or, check out this curated list of 101 Journal Prompts for Self Discovery.

Setting a timer can be useful if it helps you stay focused—start with just 10 minutes. Don’t overthink it. The magic happens when you let your thoughts and feelings spill out freely.

How this exercise helps you: It allows you to uncover hidden dreams, fears, and truths.

Self-Reflection Exercise #3: Energy Audit

For one week, track how you spend your time. Next to each activity, label it “+” if it gave you energy or “–” if it drained you. For example:

Coaching a friend through a tough time? +

Scrolling through emails for two hours? –

Patterns will start to emerge. You’ll start to notice what is expansive and contractive for you.

How this exercise helps you: It reveals what aligns with your natural passions versus what depletes you—helpful insight for both personal and professional choices.

Self-Reflection Exercise #4: Values Clarity Exercise

Search for a list of 50+ values, like this one from the Berkeley Wellbeing Institute. Explore the value words like freedom, service, creativity, connection and choose your top 5. Then, ask yourself: “How well does my current life reflect these values?”

For example, if “freedom” is a top value, but your work feels suffocating and rigid, there’s a disconnect worth exploring.

How this exercise helps you: It guides you to make decisions that reflect what truly matters most.

Self-Reflection Exercise #5: Peak Experiences Reflection

Think back to 3–5 moments when you felt fully alive, proud, or deeply fulfilled. Maybe it was helping your daughter prepare for a school talent show, volunteering at a retreat, or leading a workshop at your last job.

What were you doing? Why did it feel so meaningful?

How this exercise helps you: It points to purpose themes that have always been a part of you—sometimes hidden in plain sight.

Self-Reflection Exercise #6: Ideal Day Visualization

This one’s simple and powerful. Close your eyes and walk through your dream day, from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep.

Where are you living?

Who are you with?

What kind of work are you doing?

How do you feel throughout the day?

Write it down like a story.

How this exercise helps you: It clarifies lifestyle values and gives clues about personal development goals and career alignment.

Self-Reflection Exercise #7: Longing & Discontent

At Brave Thinking Institute, we believe that your longing and discontent are actually sacred messages from your soul. The things you’re unhappy with or the things you long for more of in your life are signs from the infinite that more is actually possible!

The trouble is, most people ignore these signs, assuming they can’t be changed. Or, they avoid them, not wanting to feel the discomfort they sometimes bring up.

With a journal or notebook, consider each of the 4 areas of life:

  • Career / Vocation
  • Relationships
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Time & Money Freedom

Identify the areas of longing in each area- what you wish you had more of- and the areas of discontent- what you wish you had less of. Then, consider how you would respond to these areas as messages about what’s possible for you instead of as signs something is wrong.

Where are there opportunties for growth, change, or new ways of being?

How this exercise helps you: It gives you clarity about opportunities for growth and change you may not have considered.

Self-Reflection Exercise #8: What Would You Love?

Once you’ve identified your longing and discontent (Self Reflection Exercise #7), consider the same four areas of life and ask yourself, “What would I love?”

This question is simple, but powerful! Asking yourself what you would love supersedes all the other, limiting questions you’ve been taught to ask like, “What should I do?” “What do I have permission to go after?” and “What do they expect of me?”

How this exercise helps you: It creates the foundation for a vision of the life you’d truly love, inspiring next steps and helping you identify possible opportunities.

Self-Reflection Exercise #9. Dream Job Description

Write a job ad for your ideal role—as if you’re hiring someone else. Include:

  • Daily responsibilities
  • Ideal work environment
  • Must-have personality traits
  • Values and mission

This flips the script and helps you see exactly what lights you up.

How this exercise helps you: It turns vague desires into a tangible vision of fulfilling work.

Self-Reflection Exercise #10: The “5 Whys” Technique

Start with a surface-level goal like, “I want to quit my job.”

Now ask yourself “Why?” And repeat the question five times, drilling deeper each time.

For example: “I want to quit my job.”

Why? — Because it feels meaningless.

Why? — Because I don’t feel like I’m helping anyone.

Why? — Because I value connection and purpose…

And so on.

How this exercise helps you: It cuts through external factors to reveal your real motivations.

Self-Reflection Exercise #11. The “Life Well Lived” Exercise

When fear or doubt creeps in, ask yourself this powerful question:

“What decision would I make if I wanted zero regrets at the end of my life?”

Maybe that means finally starting your coaching business, even if you don’t feel “ready.” Or carving out time for that passion project you keep putting off.

How this exercise helps you:  Bypasses fear and activates your courage to live a purpose-driven life.
