7 Common Small Business Mistakes Coaches Make & How to Avoid Them

Are these rookie mistakes keeping you from becoming the successful life coach you’re meant to be?

Are you a new coach, fueled by a burning desire to create impact but feeling lost in the hustle of starting your coaching practice?

You’re not alone! Starting as a life coach can feel like diving into uncharted waters, hoping to find a treasure chest of freedom and fulfillment.

Transitioning into coaching can be exciting yet overwhelming. Achieving the dream of time and money freedom requires more than just passion—you also need to understand the business side of things.

Let’s unravel 7 common stumbling blocks new coaches face and how you can sidestep them to build a successful coaching business.

1. Selling Coaching Services Instead of Solutions

A hurdle for new coaches is often not knowing how to sell their solutions effectively. These coaches often have amazing resources and experiences for their clients, but don’t have the words to communicate it effectively.

As a result, they make the mistake of telling potential customers about their product or service. Over and over again– in person, on social media, in emails– they try (and fail) to sell their services.

The problem is, most people don’t buy coaching services, sessions, or products. Your potential clients aren’t sitting around thinking, “I’d love to buy a 12 week coaching package today.” People buy solutions, results, and the promise of transformation. Your clients are thinking about how to change their lives!

Solution: Focus on understanding your ideal clients’ struggles, longing, and discontent. Then, showcase how your coaching can be the solution they’ve been searching for.

Learn to communicate the value you offer in a way that speaks to the transformation they experience. Tell stories, share successes, and let them envision the positive changes your coaching can bring to their lives.

2. Sticking to One Offer

Another pitfall among new coaches is relying on just one coaching offer. Like having a store that sells only one type of product, it limits your reach.

For many coaches, that “single offer” is a session or package of sessions. Their focus on getting clients to fill individual calendar slots distracts them from creating intentional, long term solutions.

Solution: Diversify your coaching offers. As you plan your coaching practice, consider the many ways you could potentially serve your target audience. Explore group coaching, specialized coaching programs, or various types of session packages.

Design transformation-focused experiences, rather than trying to sustain your business on one-off sessions. This ensures that you cater to different needs and preferences, appealing to a broader audience.

3. Falling Victim to the “Build It and They Will Come” Trap

After deciding to become coaches, many people spend their time and energy setting up social media, creating a website, and putting together offers…then, crickets.

These coaches have fallen into the “Build It and They Will Come” trap, assuming that once their coaching business exists, clients will appear. They struggle to fill their calendars, and as a result, struggle with cash flow.

Solution: Invest time in a marketing strategy. Leverage social media, create engaging content, and connect with your audience. Show your authenticity and expertise to build trust. Leverage the power of your signature story to connect with the people you’re meant to serve. Be present where your potential clients are.

Know that building a genuine relationship with your audience will take time and energy, but will pay off in the long run.

4. Trying to Help Everyone

People who become coaches often do so because they feel called to help people. Most coaches genuinely want to change the world and help as many people as possible, but, no one can help everyone.

Not knowing who your ideal clients are is akin to shooting arrows blindfolded and hoping one hits the target. Sure, you might land one every now and again, but the results won’t be consistent or efficient.

Solution: Spend time delving into market research. Dive deep into identifying and understanding your ideal client. Answer questions like: What are their problems, desires, and aspirations? What do they care about most? What motivates them and what keeps them up at night?

Then, tailor your coaching brand, services, and content to meet the specific needs and preferences of your ideal clients.

5. Missing the Connection Between Passion and Profit

Balancing passion with profit can be a struggle. New coaches can feel like they’re constantly juggling doing what they love and making enough money to sustain it.

Solution: As you craft a business plan and identify your coaching niche, find the sweet spot where passion meets profitability. Explore different ways to monetize your coaching while staying true to your purpose. Create offers that align with what you love doing while also ensuring they generate income.

Remember that the investment your clients make is an important part of the transformation they will experience. Likewise, the more sustainable income you generate, the more impact you’ll be able to make in the world.

Condifently grow your business

6. Treating “Sales” Like a Dirty Word

Most coaches want to spend their time helping others, not selling. When they hear the word “sales,” they often associate it with feeling pressured or persuaded into something they don’t want. New coaches assume selling will feel manipulative and sleazy.

Solution: Shift from “selling” to a heart-centered approach to enrolling new clients. From this perspective, you’re sharing something that you’re passionate about and that you genuinely believe people would benefit from.

“Sales” is simply another way of serving your potential clients with invitations to step into a greater life! When you approach selling from this place, conversations with potential clients become a joy and a privilege to have.

Heart-based conversations will leave the people you speak with feeling safe, warm and cared for. When they say “YES” to investing in themselves and their dreams by means of saying “YES” to a coaching program with you, it’s genuine…

…and your business grows as a result!

7. Ignoring Personal Growth and Development

Neglecting your own growth as a coach can hinder your success. It’s like driving a car without fuel—you won’t go very far.

Solution: Invest in continuous learning and personal development. Enhance your coaching skills, stay updated with industry trends, and work on your mindset. Overcoming limiting beliefs and honing your craft empowers you to serve your clients better.

In the same vein, connect with fellow coaches and invest in mentorship or coaching for yourself. Attend events, join online communities, and engage in conversations. Building relationships and getting support can open doors to opportunities you never thought possible!

How much does your program cost. I was just at a seminar with J.T. Foxx and heard what he had to say about coaching. But, I see programs that are very expensive.
